This chapter plays a fundamental role in Salah (daily prayer); indeed, it is recommended that Muslims recite Surah Al-Fatihah 17 times daily during obligatory prayers, at the beginning of each unit of worship.

About Surah Al-Fatihah:

• Umm ul-Quran/Kitab (Mother of the Quran/Book): As narrated by Abu Hurairah (R.A.) from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
• Sab’ul-Mathani (The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses): It is referred to this way because its seven verses are recited at the start of every raka'ah in prayer.
• Al-Hamd (Praises to Allah): Named for its inherent glorification of the Almighty Lord.
• As-Salah (The Prayer): Recognized as an essential petition, its recitation is crucial for the validity of daily prayers.
• Ash-Shifa (The Cure): According to Abu Sa'id, the Messenger ﷺ stated that “The Opening of the Book is a cure to every poison” (Ad-Darimi).
• Ar-Ruqyah (the Spiritual Cure): Abu Sa'id recounted that after he recited it to heal someone bitten by a scorpion, the Apostle ﷺ asked him about its nature as a ruqya (Bukhari), prompting its frequent recommended recitation for those unwell.
• Asas al-Quran (the Basis of Quran): This name reflects Surah Al-Fatihah's encapsulation of the fundamental tenets of Islam, primarily the veneration of the One Allah SWT.

The importance of reciting Surah Al-Fatihah in daily prayers cannot be overstated. Ubadah bin As-Samit reported that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ stated: “Whoever does not recite Surat Al-Fatihah in his prayer, his prayer is invalid” (Bukhari).
